Message from our Director
Welcome to the Northwestern University Medical Scientist Training Program. We are delighted that you have taken the time to visit and hope that you will browse our web site to learn more about the breadth and quality of our research and clinical training programs.
Each year we welcome up to 15 exceptional students to prepare for exciting and challenging careers as M.D.-Ph.D. physician-scientists. By completing MSTP training, students gain the investigative skills of biomedical scientists (Ph.D.) as well as the clinical skills of physicians (M.D.). At Northwestern, we focus on the development of skills and the accomplishment of specific objectives, including the generation of strong publication records that open doors for several steps in the career path. Graduates of the Northwestern University MSTP have the research and clinical accomplishments to secure positions in the nation’s top residency programs and have gone on to rewarding careers as professors at leading research universities, heads of major divisions of the National Institutes of Health and leaders in the pharmaceutical industry.
Why choose Northwestern University MSTP? If you seek a flexible program in state-of-the-art research and clinical facilities, located in the heart of a vibrant metropolitan yet “midwestern” setting, Northwestern may be for you. We have an intensive advising program to help with the important decisions you will make along the way, as well as a wide variety of special conferences, events, retreats and classes that integrate the research and clinical aspects of the education and promote cohesiveness and camaraderie among the students.
We have been training M.D.-Ph.D. physician-scientists since 1928 and are committed to the education of the next generation of leaders in research and medicine. If you are serious about biomedical investigation, we invite you to contact us to explore the possibilities . . . at Northwestern.
Sincerely,
David M. Engman, M.D., Ph.D.
